How should I Pray?
FAQs (019)
The disciples asked Jesus to teach them how to pray. In response to this request Jesus taught them what we now call The Lord's Prayer (Matt 6 v 5-15). This is just one of the many prayers in the Bible but it gives us an excellent pattern for our own prayers. Space is limited here, but notice the following;
- It is based on relationship, we come to God as Father.
- Our prayers should honour God. His character, everything represented by his
name, is 'hallowed'. Our prayers will therefore include worship and
adoration.
- We ask for God to rule in people's lives, including our own - for He is King.
- We pray that his will may be done. In prayer we align ourselves with his plans and
purposes.
- We may ask for the things we need to live each day, 'daily bread'.
- We can ask for forgiveness for our sins, just as we need to forgive other people who have sinned against us.
- We can ask for deliverance from temptation and evil.
- Though not specifically mentioned in the Lord's Prayer, we are also encouraged to
thank God for what he gives us and has done for us.
In short we can pray about anything, because God is interested in every aspect of our lives.
