What is God like?

FAQs (006)

God has revealed what he is like in a number of ways.

The creation he has made reveals some of his characteristics. The question 'How do we know there is a God?' covers a number of these points (see link on the right).

God has progressively revealed himself over thousands of years through his relationships with ordinary people. He spoke to, and through, prophets and priests giving his laws and guiding individuals and nations. He has shown himself to be just and wise, consistent and compassionate, loving and sensitive, caring and kind as well as powerful and strong.

We also discover that he is holy and pure, totally good and upright. As such he hates evil and dishonesty, cannot live with any sin and will one day judge the world in order to end the curse of sin once and for all.

Yet he loves sinners, and our best revelation of what God is like is seen in Jesus. In Jesus, God himself came in human form, to live our life and died our death. Consequently, despite our sinful nature, we can come into the presence of the most holy, powerful, pure, wise, merciful, awesome and loving God, and call him "Father".
