What does the Holy Spirit do?
FAQs (008)
The Holy Spirit first draws us into our relationship with God, then he encourages the relationship to grow and develop and so he equips us to play our part in God's plans for our lives.
He starts by
- drawing us
into, and through, the process of new birth which is becoming a
Christian (John 3 v 5-8);
- he leads us to
God (Eph 2 v 8); and
- he enables us to receive forgiveness for our sin and makes us sons of God (Romans 8 v 1-17) giving us life and peace.
He works in the lives of Christians...
- helping
us to pray (Romans 8 v 26);
- he opens our minds to
understand the Bible, Gods word (Eph 1 v 17-18); and
- developes our character so that we express the attributes of God in our everyday lives (Gal 5 v 22-23) and controls our natural character.
All of the above the Holy Spirit does for every Christian.
He also gives special gifts to every Christian, though not necessarily the same gifts to everyone. The gifts we receive enable us to play our part in the life of God's family and, together, to tell others about God's love.
The Bible includes several lists of Spirit-given gifts ( 1 Cor 12; Rom 12; Eph 4; 1 Peter 4 ) which illustrate the continuing creativity and diversity of the Holy Spirit's work, all of which Jesus described as "good gifts".
