Why are there so many types of church?
FAQs (023)
It has to be admitted that several types of church were originally formed when churches split over disagreements. Sometimes they split over trivial matters and sometimes over important questions of belief. Some sections still disagree with each other hundreds of years after the original problem.
However, Jesus only ever talked of "my church" in the singular. His church is composed of those who love, follow and obey Him whatever the name on the door of our particular building. Our job as Christians is to love, follow and obey Him as best we know how, and not to be judgmental about how other people are doing it. Jesus wants his church united and many church divisions must break his heart. Which is not to say that he wants us all exactly the same.
Many of the present distinctions between churches have more to do with culture than belief. Even though they differ in style (volume and tempo of music; length of sermons; many or few instruments; several leaders taking part or only one; use of robes; fixed order of service or variable; etc) members of different congregations all love and worship the same God and so are part of the one universal church of which Jesus is head.
